Aftercare for Dental Surgery

Today, dental surgeries are performed with a higher success rate than ever before. However, no matter how advanced the technology is, it’s essential to follow proper aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery. There are simple steps you can take after surgery to reduce pain and support the healing process. Here are some important aftercare tips to speed up your recovery and avoid infections:

Conditions That Are Normal After Surgery

  • Avoid very hot environments (e.g., do not walk under the sun during summer).
  • It’s normal to experience mild bleeding, a strange taste or smell in your mouth for up to 48 hours. There is no need to panic.
  • It’s normal to experience bruising, swelling, or edema in the surgical area after surgery. These are typical reactions.
  • Continue applying a cold compress for 2-3 hours (apply for 10 minutes, then rest for 5 minutes).

Things You Shouldn’t Do

  • Avoid spitting or gargling after surgery.
  • Be cautious while yawning, sneezing, or chewing.
  • Do not touch the surgical area with your hands or tongue.
  • If a tampon is placed in your mouth, leave it for 30 minutes before removing it. Do not replace it afterward.

Eating

  • Protect the wound area by chewing on the opposite side for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid acidic, floury, or sticky foods (e.g., Coke, pickles, gum, etc.).
  • Take your prescribed medications regularly as directed by your doctor.
  • Avoid hot food and drinks. Stick to warm and soft foods and beverages.
  • Smoking, alcohol, spicy foods, and acidic or hot beverages can cause chemical and thermal trauma to the mucosa. Avoid smoking for at least 12-24 hours and refrain from consuming these products until the healing process is complete.

Cleaning

  • The most important aspect of wound care is keeping the area clean. If recommended by your doctor, you can start using mouthwash from the second day.
  • Do not touch the surgical area with your toothbrush during the first 24 hours. Afterward, clean the area gently with slow, careful movements.

Sleeping

  • Avoid sleeping on your back immediately after surgery to prevent excessive bleeding.
  • For 1-2 weeks following the surgery, elevate your head with two pillows to keep the area elevated and prevent fluid buildup in the wound.
